This is the personal blog of writer Shannon Barnsley. Salt and Iron is a place to tie together, discuss, and share stories about three of the larger aspects of my life:

MYTHOLOGY: I love myths, folktales, folklore, oral traditions, folk traditions, epics, ballads, fairy tales, ghost stories, fables, folk, filk, whatever. Having studied mythology, religion, and anthropology in college, I spend way too much time thinking about the mythic. I have a lot of complicated feelings on the matter(s) and thought this might be a good outlet for them. I may also put up some related art projects.

WRITING: I am a young writer trying to carve out a niche for myself in the great sea of published and self-published authors. My main focus is fantasy (epic/high fantasy and urban fantasy are both favorites), but I also dabble in science fiction, literary fiction, historical fiction, young adult, and the occasional horror piece. I do memoir and poetry as well. This section of the blog will be a mix of talking about writing, writers, and writingly things, as well as the occasional original piece or link to newly published work.

HEALTH: I have a little known autonomic disorder called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome caused, in my case, by hereditary mast cell problems. Just getting a diagnosis was hard enough and that was only the beginning. Though all of this can be hard, this blog will tackle the matter with the same upbeat sense of humor that keeps me going through it all. To keep my POTS symptoms under control I am on a high sodium diet by doctors’ orders. Despite what you may think, it is actually very hard to get enough salt (especially if you want to eat healthy or have food allergies). Thus, I thought maybe I could share some of my trials, successes, and delicious recipes along the way. And, if anyone else out there has to eat a high sodium diet and/or has POTS, please feel free to share your own. I’d love to learn and help each other out. I am not a doctor or a dietician, however, so please take everything with a grain of salt and consult your doctor before starting any diet.

Other topics may slip in here and there, but these are the three prongs of the trident I shall wield as I ride into battle, er, the internet. To victory! To health! To a warm mug and a good story!
